The Low-Hanging Fruit Of Living A Stronger, Longer Life

Feb 17, 2024

A simple note that can change your life

How often have you nodded along and muttered, "Yeah, I know," when someone reminds you of the basics? Drink more water, sleep well, and look after yourself – sounds familiar, right? I've been there too.

Growing up, my dad used to say, "Jeff, you're hearing me, but you're not listening." We're gifted with golden nuggets of advice sometimes daily, yet we brush them off, thinking we're already on top of it or claiming, "Tried that, didn't work" – yep, that's been me as well. Funny thing, the older I get, the wiser my dad becomes.

Why complicate life when simple, actionable steps can dramatically enhance your well-being today, tomorrow, and for life? The power of small, consistent changes over time can be transformative. Why not reach for the low-hanging fruit first?

5 Vital Pieces Of Low-Hanging Fruit

It's right there, within your grasp. It's accessible and often free, and you can start implementing these changes today so you can live stronger, longer.

Sleep:

  • Establish a routine. For me, I aim for 10:30 pm and 6:00 am. Do your best to hit the hay and rise at the same time every day. Life happens, but strive for consistency.
  • No screens in the bedroom. At a minimum, no screens in bed. You can do that.
  • Optimize your sleep environment – cool, dark, and quiet.

Movement:

  • Commit to moving daily. This is your Physical Practice, your reason for being here – and you're doing fantastic.
  • Engage in activities that don't suck. If you don't like to run, don't. Whatever you do, start slower than you think you should – you're playing the long game of life.
  • Own your movement. Proper form, position, and alignment are crucial for longevity and function.

Nutrition:

  • Choose whole foods. Eat enough. Not too much.
  • Hydrate well.
  • Ignore extreme diets and the noise of diet culture. They don't serve you, and they're mostly a bunch of shitweasels.

Stress:

  • Stress is a double-edged sword. It can fuel you or deplete you. Find your Dose. It'll take a minute. Be patient. Be like Goldilocks.
  • Managing stress might seem impossible, but awareness of how you react and respond to stress IS within your power. This one thing has changed my life.

Self-Care:

  • Practice simple acts of gratitude. A diaphragmatic breath in, a slow exhale, and a moment of thanks can work wonders. It doesn't have to be 30 minutes twice a day of meditation. Start small :)
  • Value your alone time as much as your time with loved ones and nature.
  • Embrace massage, meditation, and activities that genuinely make you feel good and align with your goals.

You've likely heard all of this before. This week, I challenge you to pick one of these areas to focus on. I'd love to know how you do. Reply or message me.

I love keeping things simple and minimal, especially when it has the power to transform lives – mine included. I'm confident it can do the same for you.

Let's make those changes together and live our best 2nd Half of Life!
